Porn gave us plastic sex, Facebook gave us plastic intimacy

Why did Facebook take off to the astronomical degree that it has?

Because we were already addicted to the internet.

Ergo, the dawn of social media.

What’s our need? (connection)

What’s our addiction? (internet)

SOCIAL MEDIA = The Perception of how the addiction can fill the need

Do you feel lonely?

Do you feel like you have more Facebook friends than friends in real life?

Do you crave to feel real, deep intimacy.

The kind that can only be felt with another human being sitting in the same room with you?

I had a date a few years ago with a girl in her 20s, about a decade younger than me.

We talked. And oh how did we talk.

We touched. We cuddled.

We were intimate.

This led to oral sex.

But what I remember about the date was the intimacy.

We both felt like we hadn’t connected to another other person that deeply (for me in a while, for her, she said ever.)

I see a meme. It says, “When I make eye contact for the first time, I want it to be the right person.”

Facebook, for all it’s capacity to connect us to 1,001 friends, deceives us into thinking the kind of connection it offers is intimate.

The lack of a real, deep intimacy is something that we’ve been lacking for awhile. Probably since before the materialistic 80s.

I think the hippies had it in the 60s.

But that got a little lost in all the sex (and drugs).

The intimacy, tho.

We CRAVE that, we long for that.

That’s the deep, oooey gooo of deep human connection.

Being, being, being with another person in the same room

That’s the connection we crave.

Facebook has taken that lack of connection to an extreme that porn never could.

Facebook is worse than porn.

In the way that Porn gave us plastic version of sex, Facebook has given us a plastic version of intimacy.

Why did Facebook take off to the astronomical degree that it has?

Because we were already addicted to the internet.

Ergo, the dawn of social media.
